Obedience Classes

All classes are held at the Cheviot Hills Recreation Center, on Motor Ave near Pico Blvd, in West Los Angeles.

You may register for a class if there is a start date posted and if the class is not already marked full. Please send in your registration form and check as soon as you know which class you want to take. Classes do fill, and we do note reserve places in class until we have received our signed waiver and payment. If you are signing up for a class with a waiting list, we will contact you when we receive your pre-registration.

NOTE: Start dates are not guaranteed and may change due to weather and circumstances beyond our control. If a start date must change, the new date will be posted here on the Club web site. Please check the start dates for your classes.

Regular and Rally Obedience Classes

Puppy and Manners	Wednesdays 7 pm - 8 pm	January 25, 2011	Lynn	8 weeks $110*	Socialize your new puppy in a safe and fun setting. This class will introduce you and your dog to basic obedience commands, leash training and proper behavior around other dogs and people. The class also covers responsible pet ownership and managing puppy behaviors such as chewing, digging and jumping. Open to puppies 3 months to 6 months old. (Dogs older than 5 months can enroll in a Novice obedience class without prior puppy training.)
Novice Obedience	Mondays 5 pm - 6 pm	February 13, 2012	Tawn	8 weeks $105*	Dogs 5 months old and older Registrations will not be accepted for dogs under 5 months old. Learn how to train your dog in basic obedience using positive reinforcement

Intermediate Novice	Saturdays 10:30 am - 11:30 am	February 11, 2012	Lynn	8 weeks $105*	Successful completion of a WLAOTC Novice Obedience class, or permission of the trainer. This class builds on Novice class training, increasing focus and control, and improving the skills needed for a happy, well behaved pet. We will also cover the exercises for the AKC Canine Good Citizen test. Whether or not you are considering going on to train for one (or more) of the many dog activities available today, this class is the next step in building a better relationship with your canine partner.

Advanced Novice Obedience	Wednesdays 6pm - 7pm	March 7, 2012	Tawn	8 weeks $105*	Successful completion of a WLAOTC Intermediate Novice Obedience Class or permission of the trainer. Dogs must be solid in Novice Obedience Exercises. This class focuses on developing focus and skills for the obedience ring. Students who do not plan to compete in obedience are welcome.
Competition Prep	Mondays 6 pm - 7 pm	March 19, 2012	Tawn	8 weeks $105*	Successful completion of a WLAOTC Advanced Novice Obedience Class or permission of the trainer. Dogs must be solid in most Novice Obedience Exercises. It aims to improve or perfect performance in Novice exercises and develop the attention needed for competition. Students who do not plan to compete in Obedience are welcome.
Competition Prep	Mondays 7pm - 8pm	March 19, 2012	Tawn	8 weeks $105*
Open/Utility Obedience	Wednesdays 7 pm - 8 pm	February 1, 2012	Tawn	12 weeks $150*	Advanced competitive obedience training emphasizing the exercises required for CDX (Open) and UD (Utility). Permission of the trainer is mandatory.
Open/Utility Obedience	Thursdays 10:30 am - 11:30 am	April 5, 2012	Tawn	12 weeks $150*
Beginning Rally Obedience	Mondays 8pm - 9pm	January 30, 2012	Tawn	8 weeks $105*	Learn how to navigate Rally courses for competition in AKC, ASCA and UKC obedience trials. In this fun sport, handlers are allowed to talk to and encourage their dogs while following instruction signs in the obedience ring. This is an entry-level class; however, new handlers and their dogs should be familiar with basic obedience commands, and dogs should be under handler's control. Intermediate students will be accommodated with more challenging signs, and will have the option to run their dogs off leash.
Rally Obedience Advanced/Excellent	Wednesdays 8pm - 9pm	February 15, 2012	Tawn	8 weeks $120* Drop-in $20 per class*	Continuing training for handlers and dogs competing for Rally Advanced and Rally Excellent titles. Open to all dog/handler teams who have earned a Rally Novice title, and to others with permission of the instructor. Drop-in option available for experienced Rally competitors wanting to brush-up on skills before a trial. Contact the Rally registrar at wlaotcrally@gmail.com for details.
Rally Obedience Advanced/Excellent	Thursdays 11:30 am - 12:30 pm	February 16, 2012	Tawn	8 weeks $120* Drop-in $20 per class*
Trick Dog	Sundays 11:30 am - 12:30 pm	January 29, 2012	Debbie	4 weeks $65	Entertain your friends and family with a whole new repertoire of dog tricks! In this 4-week course, our trainer will give you the skills to teach your dog just about anything: how to bow, crawl, wave, "tell me a secret" and even jump through your arms. The class is open to beginners, and novice obedience students, but dogs should already know how to sit and lie down on command and be under a handler's control.
Come When Called	Sundays 11:30 am - 12:30 pm	February 26, 2012	Debbie	4 weeks $65	Does your dog think that "Come" is an optional command? We humans know that a reliable recall is one of the most important things our dog should know. It could be a life saver. This four week class focuses on teaching Fido that he/she really does need to come, even though that squirrel/skateboarder/cute poodle is Oh So Interesting! You will learn fun recall games that will make your dog like to "Come When Called".
Feisty Fido	Saturdays 9:30 am - 10:30 am	February 11, 2012	Lynn	8 weeks $165	This class will focus on techniques for handling your Feisty Fido, using positive training techniques to address behavior issues in leash-reactive dogs.

Start dates may change if classes are cancelled because of the weather. If a start date must change, the new date will be posted here on the Club web site.

You must be registered and have paid in advance in order to participate in the Conformation class. No day of class show ups are allowed unless arrangements have been made with the Obedience Director in advance. Please email us at: obedience@wlaotc.com if you have any questions.
